Perspective:

To see my side of the wall is to have respect for me.

To see your side of the wall is to have respect for you.
To see both sides of the wall is to have respect for neither.

Abstract:

If you can understand another person’s ways and beliefs, you can respect them even though they are different from yours.  Be kind enough to listen and hear what others have to say. Ask questions if necessary to fully comprehend their point of view.

Then, make your views clear so others can understand what you believe and the positions you take. Ask questions to see if they understand. They may not agree, but they will respect you for your convictions.

If you profess to understand both points of view, most likely, you really don’t believe either and will not respect the persons who hold those views.
